If people want to find a way to relieve neck pain, they need to find ways to make the muscles of their neck stronger. They can look for different ways, but the best way to strengthen muscles is to exercise. Exercising may not be the favorite activity for people to do, but it is important, especially for someone that is suffering from chronic neck pain. For those that are willing to put in the effort, there are a few really good exercises that can help make the neck stronger and reduce the pain that is felt in the neck.

Exercises to Strengthen the Neck and Reduce Neck Pain

There are two exercises that people can do that are simple to do, require no special equipment and are effective at both relieving pain and helping strengthen the muscles of the neck. Like any other exercises, they need to be done properly. It is also a good idea to stretch before hand and help the muscles after exercising.  The two exercises to use are:

  • Back Burn – A fairly simple exercise to complete the back burn requires a person to stand up with their back pressed against a wall. The feet should be placed about four inches away from the wall. With the lower back flattened against the wall a person should place their elbows, forearms, back of the hands and fingers against the wall. They should be about shoulder height. Slowly slide the hands up the wall over the shoulders as far as possible and then return to the original position. Repeat the exercise 10 times.
  • Resistance – A very simple exercise. Place the hands behind the head in the cupped position. Push back with the head as you resist the movement with your hands. Hold that position for 5 seconds.

There are many other neck strengthening exercises that can be used to help relieve neck pain. To learn more about what you can do, contact Epic Healthcare & Physical Medicine.
