Common Causes of Neck Pain

Epic Healthcare » Common Causes of Neck Pain

Neck pain can be caused by any of number of things and often times is very uncomfortable and can limit a person’s range of motion.  Most neck pain is from repeated or prolonged movements of the neck resulting in a strain, sprain or spasm.

Everyday Causes of Neck Pain

Things we do in our everyday lives can lead to neck pain if we aren’t careful about our posture or mindful of our surroundings.  If you hold your head in an unnatural or uncomfortable position too long while watching television or reading you can strain your neck muscles.  Sleeping in an unusual position with your neck twisted or using pillows that are too big or too flat can also have a negative impact on the sensitive muscles of your neck.  Any type of work that requires your head and neck to be in an awkward position for an extended period of time can also cause neck pain.  Even with perfect posture, stress and tension can lead to tight, painful muscles.

Injuries Causing Neck Pain

While it is easy to hurt your neck during everyday activities such as sleeping or painting your ceiling, it is also very possible to find yourself with pain caused by any number of injuries.  One of the most common injuries that results in neck pain is whiplash in a car accident.  The sudden and often unexpected movement can cause significant pain and discomfort after an automobile accident.  Falling, hitting your head and rough sports also can cause serious pain and injury.

Neck Pain Caused by Medical Conditions

Sometimes, no matter how careful we are, neck pain is unavoidable due to an underlying medical condition.  Ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and torticollis are all medical conditions that can greatly impact your neck.  Other illnesses such as the flu and meningitis can cause aches and inflammation.

As our bodies age, they become more susceptible to injury and pain.  Problems from aging that can cause pain include arthritis and cervical spinal stenosis.  No matter what neck pain you suffer from, there are a number of treatment options available for you.
