Medical Therapeutic Massage
At Epic Healthcare & Physical Medicine, our massage therapists are highly skilled at several different types of massage, from relaxing Swedish massage to therapeutic neuromuscular and myofascial therapy. Therapeutic neuromuscular massage typically involves pressure applied with fingers, knuckles and elbows. Muscles that are in spasm are painful to the touch. After the muscle is relaxed through massage therapy, lactic acid may be released from the muscle, and the muscle will be receiving more blood and oxygen and heal more readily. Our therapists work in conjunction with our physicians for the best possible client care.
Also known as Swedish Massage, a style of manual therapy consisting of long, light stroking massage to warm up the muscles. Effleurage is a gliding or sliding stroke, petrissage means compression and kneading of the muscle, tapotement involves percussion, rhythmic tapping or beating the muscles, vibration can be mechanically assisted, and friction massage is rubbing perpendicular across the muscle fibers.
Also known as trigger point myotherapy or myofascial release, is a style of sports massage where sustained pressure is applied to tender trigger points to decrease muscle spasm and help biomechanical dysfunction. This is effective for the treatment of soft tissue injuries and chronic pain. Rolfing is another type of deep tissue massage that may not be very comfortable during the procedure but can be effective for long term relief. Trigger point myotherapy is recognized by the American Academy of Pain Management as an effective treatment for back pain caused by soft tissue injury such as muscle strain. Often this therapy is paid for by major medical insurance.
